Abstract

Primary Health Care Center in South Surabaya gives different number of days on prescription refill, especially in patients with chronic disease, such as diabetes mellitus, which is usually for 5 to 10 days only. The short number of days on prescription refill requires the patient to visit the center more often in order to obtain the medicines. This will affect the adherence to their treatments and the cost incurred by patients. The aim of this study was to find out the influence of number of days on prescription refill towards medication adherence and cost in diabetes mellitus at Primary Health Care Center in South Surabaya. This study was a crossectional study using accidental sampling done from February to May 2017. Data was obtained using survey method with ARMS questionnaire in Indonesian version to measure adherence. Structured interview was used to measure the cost. The highest cost incurred by patient was non-direct cost (Rp 4.371.065). The analysis result using Spearman Correlation between number of days and adherene showed p value 0,671 and r 0,048. There was no significant influence of number of days on prescription refill towards medication adherence. The anaylisis between number of days and total cost showed p value 0,008 and r -0,291. There was significant influence of number of days on prescription refill toward the cost incurred by diabetes mellitus patients at Primary Health Care Center in South Surabaya.
