Abstract
Background: Dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) is biphasic fever, often fatal, caused by dengue virus characterized by abnormalities hemostasis and capillary permeability. Children are at higher risk of severe dengue. Estimates of the dengue infection's constant rate of 137 primary infections per 1000 children per year. Objective: This research aimed to review the use of drugs for symptomatic and supportive purposes DHF pediatric patients and to identify potential drug-related problems (DRPs). Methods: It was a retrospective study based on time limited sampling method during period of 1st January to 31st December 2016 at Universitas Airlangga Hospital Surabaya. Research protocol was approved by the Hospital Ethics Committee. Data were analyzed descriptively. Results: The result showed that 50 DHF pediatric patients included in the study were 50% females and 50% males, aged 10-14 age group (46%) and diagnosed with grade I DHF (30%). The common symptoms occured were naused-vomitting (86%), leukopenia (82%), fever (48%), trombocytopenia (48%). All patients received fluid therapy (100%), dietary supplements (68%), antipyretic-analgesics (82%), stress ulcer prophylaxis (45%), antibiotics (12%), antiemetics (14%), corticosteroids (12%), antihistamines (12%), diuretic (10%), antifibrinolytics (2%). Drug-related problems identified were potential side effects of oral corticosteroids (2%) on GI disturbances. Conclusion: Administration of a therapeutic algorithm in DHF pediatric patients according to Guidelines for Diagnosis and Administration of Dengue Virus Infection in Pediatric 2014 at Universitas Airlangga Hospital Surabaya.
