Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find the effects of smoking on enamel and dentin microhardness, since the combination of smoke and crevicular fluid may spread to the enamel surface through microleakage. The study was conducted in vitro on the tooth specimen before and after immersion in a liquid containing Jaetek cigarette smoke, cigarette smoke, and pure eugenol in different periods of time. Afterwards the enamel and dentin microhardness was measured. The results showed a direct decrease of enamel microhardness. Meanwhile the dentin showed an increase in microhardness, before a decrease of microhardness occurred. The largest decrease of microhardness occurred after immersion in pure eugenol and kretek cigarette, but the decrease did not occur when the specimen was immersed in cigarette smoke. The smoke could seep through the dentino-enamel Junction and the chronic and high dosage of eugenol caused protein denaturation. It was assumed that the protein of the organic part of the tooth was destroyed by eugenol from the kretek cigarette smoke and pure eugenol. The function of the organic part of the tooth as a bond between hydroxyl-apatite crystals was lost. Therefore the hydroxyl-apatlte crystals became unstable and the microhardness decreased. Increase of microhardness in the dentin occurred before it finally decreased, because dentin contained collagen which became sclerosed before it finally denaturated. It can be concluded that pure eugenol and kretek cigarette smoke decrease the enamel and dentin microhardness. It is adviced to continue the study to find the damaging process between the organic and inorganic parts of the tooth using the nano technology.
