Abstract

Ivy gourd (Coccinia grandis) is widely used as a herbal medicine to treat many disease (Deokate, et al., 2012). This plant can be used as an antibacterial, hepatoprotective, anti-oxidant, anthelmintics, anti-ulcer and anti-inflammatory (Temilsevan, et al., 2011). Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive bacteria that often found as normal flora of the skin and mucous membranes in humans. However, if there are predisposing factors such as the high quantity of bacteria that accompanied by an immunocompromised host, Staphylococcus aureus can cause disease. In addition, bacterial resistance also frequently reported in treatment of these bacterial infections (Sujudi, 2011). The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effectiveness of ivy gourd (Coccinia grandis) to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus at varying concentrations ie 250 mg/ml, 500 mg/ml, 750 mg/ml and 1000 mg/ml. The method of the experiment is agar well diffusion test with 4 treatments and 1 control with 6 times replication. The highest concentration selected was 1000 mg/ml. Data obtained by measuring the inhibition zone formed around the wells that has been poured by ivy gourd leaf extract on Muller Hinton Agar plate (MHA) that planted with Staphylococcus aureus and incubated at 37°C for 24 hours. In this experiment, up to the highest concentration of ivy gourd leaf extract (1000 mg/ml) is not effective to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. Further research is needed to carry out the preparation of the extracts were age, the picking season, drying and grinding method of ivy gourd leaves.
