Abstract

Background: Based on Riset Kesehatan Dasar (Riskesdas) 2013, the prevalence of cataract in Indonesia is still 1.8% and the estimated incidence of cataract is 0.1%. Thus, the number of cataract cases will increase if it is untreated. Moreover, cataract occurs 2 to 5 times more likely in adult with diabetes than those without diabetes. Previous studies reported that majority of diabetic patient who had no diabetic retinopathy (DR) or had mild to moderate non proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) achieved visual improvement after phacoemulsification. However, it is also reported that both intraoperative complication and postoperative complication were more frequent in diabetic group compare to the non-diabetic group. The objectives of this research was to identify the comparison of the visual acuity and complications after phacoemulsification cataract surgery in cataract patient with diabetes type 2 and without diabetes at RSUD Dr. Soetomo and Klinik Mata Tritya. Methods: This cross sectional study with total sampling involved 1155 cataract patients in Opthalmology Outpatient Clinic RSUD Dr. Soetomo and Klinik Mata Tritya Surabaya during the year 2013 – 2016. The number of sample fulfilled the inclusive criteria were 90 patients of which 39 patients are cataract with diabetes mellitus patients and 51 patients of cataract without diabetes mellitus. The others were excluded because of uncomplete medical record, aphakia patient and patients who had not completed up to 3 months of follow up. The data collected using medical records and analyzed using Mann-Whitney test and chi-square test with pvalue (p) < 0.05. Results: There were no significant difference between one day, one week, one month, two months and three months post operative visual acuity of diabetes mellitus and non diabetes mellitus patients in this research (p = 0.578, p = 0.461, p = 1.000, p = 0.630, and p = 1.000 respectively). Also, there was no significant difference on one day, one week, one month, two months and three months complication after phacoemulsification cataract surgery between diabetes mellitus and non diabetes mellitus patient (p = 0.578, p = 0.461, p = 1.000, p = 0.630 and p = 1.000 respectively). Conclusion: In conclusion, this study shows that both diabetic and non diabetic patients who had phacoemulsification cataract surgery would have good visual acuity outcome and also had less major complication.
