Abstract

Introduction: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most commonly found hospital pathogen. With increasing population that has antibiotic resistance has urge researcher to find an effective way in battling this “super pathogen”. Besides, there is a few data available which clearly stated that MRSA strain is more virulent than MSSA. This study investigates antibiotic susceptibility pattern of both MRSA and MSSA. Methods: This study was a lab experimental. In-vitro activities of 6 antibiotics against 10 isolates, 5 isolates from MRSA and 5 isolates from MSSA, were determined by disk-diffusion technique. Isolates were acquired from RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya. Categorization of MRSA and MSSA was determined by previous microbiological testing. The result is analyzed with description method. Results: All of MRSA isolates were resistant to tetracycline, gentamicin, and ciprofloxacin. MRSA were susceptible to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (80%), clindamycin (80%), and erythromycin (60%). Meanwhile all of MSSA isolates were susceptible to all antibiotics tested, with resistance rate to clindamycin (20%), tetracycline (20%), erythromycin (40%), gentamicin (40%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (20%), and ciprofloxacin (40%).. Conclusion: There is a difference between MRSA and MSSA antibiotic susceptibility pattern. MRSA still resistant to most of antibiotics, but is sensitive to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, clindamycin, and erythromycin. While MSSA sensitive to all antibiotics. Continuous surveillance on antibiotic susceptibility pattern of S. aureus in understanding emerging trends in RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya is of utmost importance.
