Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the antimicrobial effect of metronidazole, ciprofloxacin, and minocycline with their combination against Enterococcus faecalis. Seven experimental drugs were used in this study, e.g. metronidazole, ciprofloxacin, minocycline, the combination of metronidazole-ciprofloxacin, the combination of metronidazole-minocycline, the combination of ciprofloxacin-minocycline and the combination of metronidazole-ciprofloxacin-minocycline. The antimicrobial effectivity of each drug was evaluated by measuring the MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration). The MIC data of each drug was recorded and then analyzed statistically using independent t-test at p d” 0.05. The results of the statistic analysis showed that there were significant differences between the antimicrobial effect of minocycline compared to that of metronidazole and ciprofloxacin; the combination metronidazole-ciprofloxacin, and the combination metronidazole-minocycline. It was concluded that the most effective drug against Enterococcus faecalis was minocycline and it was followed consecutively by ciprofloxacin, combination of metronidazole-ciprofloxacin, combination of metronidazole¬minocycline; combination of ciprofloxacin-minocycline, combination of metronidazole-ciprofloxacin¬minocycline; and metronidazole.
