Abstract

Background: Allergy is one of the most common disease for children in the world especially in developing country such as Indonesia. Allergy is a disease which the symptoms are very various, such as allergic rhinitis, food allergy, and atopic dermatitis. Allergy disease occur when the body is sensitized by an allergen, which is also various. One of the leading cause of allergy is not giving exclusive breast feeding for babies. Objective: The aim of this study is to analyze the association between exclusive breastfeeding with allergy disease in children Methods: This research is a case control study with subjing on age of the child. The data is taken from the medical record in the allergy outpatient unit in RSUD Dr. Soetomo. The amount of subject is 118. The case group is 59 subjects who suffered allergy and the control group is 59 subjects who did not suffer from allergy. The data was analyzed with Chi-square test statistics. Results: The bivariate analysis from Chi-square test showed that there are positive association between exclusive breastfeeding and allergy (p value = 0,001 OR= 0,255 CI = 0,115 – 0,568) Conclusion: Exclusive breastfeeding reduces the risk of allergy in children.
