Abstract

Background: Finishing and polishing of removable orthodontic appliance will produce acrylic dust that can be harmful to health, one of which resulted in pneumoconiosis. The duration and concentration of exposure is an important factor associated with the risk associated with toxicology. Objective: To find out the amount of acrylic dust and duration of finishing and polishing generated in the manufacture of a removable orthodontic appliance by the fourth and sixth semester student of TKG Study Program the Faculty of Vocational TKG UNAIR. Methods: This observational study conducted with samples were removable orthodontic appliances made with the layering technique. After setting, the plate was removed from the working model and was weighed. The time required to complete finishing and polishing were recorded and also after the orthodontic plate smooth and shiny. Data were analyzed descriptively. Differences in the amount of acrylic dust and duration of finishing and polishing by the fourth and sixth semester students analyzed by t test (α= 0.05). The relationship between the amount of acrylic dust and the duration of finishing and polishing was analyzed using Pearson test with p value α 0:05 rated significantly. Results: The t-test showed that the finishing and total dust acrylic produced by the students of fourth semester was significantly greater than the sixth semester (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference of the amount of polishing dust between them (p> 0.05). Duration of finishing and polishing by student of fourth semester significantly different from the sixth semester. (P = <0.05). One way ANOVA test showed that there was no significant difference on the amount of dust finishing (p = 0.89), the amount of dust polishing (p = 0.52) and total dust acrylic (p = 0.97), duration of finishing (p = 0:29) and polishing (p = 0.064) of the three orthodontic plates made by the sixth semester students. Analysis by Tuckey HSD showed significant differences between the total finishing and polishing time in the manufacture of first and third orthodontic plate. Pearson correlation test found no relationship between the amount of acrylic dust and finishing and polishing duration by the students of fourth semester. (P = 0.45> 0.05 to r = 0.14); as well as students of sixth semester. (P = 0.11> 0.05, p = 0:29). Conclusion: It is concluded that the amount of acrylic dust in the manufacture of orthodontic plate by the fourth and sixth semester are 1.56 and 1.32 grams, respectivelly Finishing and polishing duration were 220.5 and 55.58 minutes, respectivelly. With the danger of exposure to dust acrylic, it is advisable to always anticipate the dust by wearing personal protective equipment, training to increase skills, providing a vacuum cleaner and adequate ventilation.
