Abstract

Introduction: Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of the bacteria that causes nosocomial infection. Desinfectants, such as Benzalkonium Chloride, are used to prevent nosocomial infection. It is usually used in concentration of 5μg/ml. But, there are some strains of MRSA that were found to be resistant towards Benzalkonium Chloride and need higher concentration to inhibit their growth. Method: This posttest only experimental research is aimed to compare the effectivity of Benzalkonium Chloride in some different concentrations to inhibit the growth of HA-MRSA and determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of Benzalkonium Chloride against HA-MRSA. The sample is HA-MRSA with type III SCCmec obtained from stored isolate at Laboratory of Clinical Microbiology RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya. The sample was then divided into 6 groups based on the concentration of Benzalkonium Chloride in their inoculation media (0μg/ml or positive control, 0,625μg/ml, 1,25μg/ml, 2,5μg/ml, 5μg/ml, and 10μg/ml). The dependent variable is the growth of HA-MRSA in the media containing Benzalkonium Chloride, stated by the amount of colonies observed. Result: The result of the research shows that the MIC of Benzalkonium Chloride for HA-MRSA is 5 μg/ml, there is significant difference in MRSA colony count between different group of Benzalkonium Chloride concentrations (p = 0,001 in Kruskal Wallis analysis), and there is negative correlation between Benzalkonium Chloride concentration and HA-MRSA growth (p = 0,000 and r = -0,880 in Spearman correlation analysis). Conclusion: MIC of Benzalkonium Chloride for HA-MRSA is 5 μg/ml and Benzalkonium Chloride in higher concentration lowers HA-MRSA growth.
