Abstract
Background: In Indonesia, HIV / AIDS cases continue to increase since its first discovery in 1987. There were 150,296 HIV positive cases and 55,799 AIDS cases up until 30 September 2014. East Java alone has the second largest contribution in the number of cases (Kemenkes RI, 2014). Aim: To determine demographic and risk factors of HIV in the Inpatient Care Facility of Unit Perawatan Intermediet dan Penyakit Infeksi (IRNA UPIPI) RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya Methods: This was a descriptive retrospective study to determine the most common risk factor of HIV, clinical status of the patients, and demographic factors including sex, age group, level of education, occupation, ethnicity, and domicile of the patiens. Results: Out of 38 samples, the most dominant risk factor was being heterosexual, either unprotected sex or multipartner sex, with a total of 18 patients (47.4%). As for demographic factors, it was found that the majority of sex was male (55.3%). There were 20 out of 38 patients (52.6%) in the age group of 35-44 years old. The most dominant level of education of the patients was high school (36.8%) and the most common occupation was private employee (42.2%). Conclusion: It was found that being heterosexual was still the most common risk factor of HIV, followed by being homosexual and injecting drug users (IDUs), and the majority of sex was still dominated by male.
