Abstract
Background: Stroke is a neurological deficit with acute focal injury from the central nervous system caused by a vascular disorder of infarction or cerebral hemorrhage. Stroke is the leading cause of disability and death worldwide. Elevated LDL levels in blood is one of the important risk factors that reflects a person's susceptibility to atherosclerosis that can increase the occurrence of stroke. However, there is inconsistent difference in LDL cholesterol levels in ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Thus, this study aims to analyze differences of LDL cholesterol in ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Objective: To analyze the comparasion of LDL cholesterol in ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Methods: This research was designed in a retrospective cross-sectional study. Comparasion of LDL cholesterol at admission was assessed using Mann-Whitney test. Results: This study included 80 of 135 patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke of both sex aged between 21-81 in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital from September 2014 until December 2015. From the analyses, percentage of LDL cholesterol ≥ 130 mg/dL was 48.1% in ischemic and haemorrhagic stroke. The median of LDL cholesterol in ischemic stroke was 138 mg/dL. The median of LDL cholesterol in hemorrhagic stroke was 122 mg/dL. There was no statistically significant difference in LDL cholesterol levels in patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke (p=0.398). Conclusion: No significant difference in LDL cholesterol levels in ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya.
