Abstract

Introduction: Pituitary tumor is intracranial benign tumor caused by hormonal disorders or abnormal mass growth. The symptoms of pituitary tumors are rarely recognized, makes tumor bigger and complications to other organs. This study aims to determine the clinical variation and appropriate diagnostic process of pituitary tumor, so that the results of this research could become the references to improve knowledge, reduce morbidity and mortality of the patients. Methods: This study used a descriptive retrospective method by taking medical record data on all patients with pituitary tumor in every departments at Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya in 2012-2016. Result: The results showed that patients with pituitary tumor were mostly aged 50-59 years (36%) and most of them were male (57%). The most common type of pituitary tumor is functioning adenoma (secretory) with the size ≥ 10 mm, found in 32 cases (68%). The most dominant clinical symptoms in patients with pituitary tumors were headache (74%) and visual field impairment found in 31 people (66%). The most common visual defect was bitemporal hemianopsia (80%) and papil athropy (72%). MRI without contrast was commonly used to help diagnose pituitary tumor (40%). The most common hormonal complications were hyperprolactinemia (23%). Based on the results, it could be concluded that there are various clinical complications of pituitary tumors, so the initial and proper diagnosis is very important.
