Abstract

Diabetes mellitus ranked the third position as the cause of death in Indonesia. The prevalence of people with diabetes mellitus increased from year to year. Insulin resistance is an early sign of diabetes type 2 that occurs in situations where target organ sensitivity decreases against insulin. Excess free radicals can be mutually insulin resistance. The purpose of this study was to determine how the effects of insulin can be a determining factor. This study used case control design conducted on 22 outpatients at Clinic University of Muhammadiyah Surabaya. Data were collected during June until July 2017. Data were collected using questionnaires, anthropometric measurements (body weight and height), and laboratory examinations (fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, and MDA-free radical levels). The consumption pattern is based on semiquantitative feed frequency questionnaire. Insulin resistance status using normal HOMA IR method of < 2,77. Multivariate analysis with Logistic Regression was used to determine the effect of free radical on the occurrence of insulin resistance. The results showed the possibility of eating outdoors with a frequency of at least 3 times a week can affect insulin resistance through at =0.05 with p value 0.009. Eating outside home habits lead to increased levels of MDA and increase the risk of insulin resistance 0,038 times higher than eating at home. Frequent consumption of food outdoors will have an impact on obesity due to low intake of fiber from fruits and vegetables and trigger insulin resistance that sometimes causes classic symptoms of diabetes. Elevating levels of MDA-free radicals can increase the risk of insulin resistance. Applying a healthy lifestyle by consuming fiber-rich foods can prevent the formation of excessive free radicals that can combine insulin resistance. Thought of weight and diabetes mellitus.
