Abstract

Background. Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and QMix are solutions that used as root canal irrigation. During endodontic procedure, irrigation solutions are often pushed beyond the apical foramen and cause futher periapical tissue complications becase of their toxicity. Purpose. The aim of this study to prove cytotoxicity effect of NaOCl and QMiX on cultured human periodontal ligament fibroblast cells. Method. Cultured human periodontal ligament fibroblast cells were exposed to NaOCl and QMix in various concentrations. Cell viability was assessed with MTT assay and the result were analyzed statistically and measured by probit analysis to get median lethal concentration (LC50), the concentration which is lethal to 50% of the cells, it shows cytotoxicity of a given agent. Result. NaOCl is cytotoxic to cultured human periodontal ligament fibroblast cells at 0,254μl/ml concentration and QMix is cytotoxic cultured human periodontal ligament fibroblast cells is 0,363μl/ml. Conclusion. Both NaOCl and QMix are cytotoxic to cultured human periodontal ligament fibroblast cells at certain concentration
