Abstract

Female characters who are masculinized become the raising phenomenon in this decade. Women representation in Hollywood films often characterized as inferior toward patriarchy, or they tend to objectify women as a visual pleasure even in some female heroine films. This study analyzes the gender subversion in Rey’s character, the female protagonist character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015). This qualitative study used some of the film scenes to find out the flexibility in the female gender as proposed by Judith Butler. The study also supported by Narrative and Non-Narrative aspects from the movie. The result from this study indicated that the character of Rey was different to the traditional gender role and prove that gender is fluid variable which shifts and changes in different contexts and different times. Rey in the films shows both masculinity and femininity side which developed an account of patriarchal culture which assumed that masculine and feminine genders would inevitably be built, by the culture, upon 'male' and 'female' bodies, making the same destiny just as inescapable as stated by Judith Butler.
