Abstract

The protagonist Meursault in Camus’s The Stranger and Harun in Daoud’s The Meursault Investigation, are two literary characters embodying persona of immoralists. However, there is a distinct reason for these two characters to become immoralists, and it is related with the socio-cultural identity of each character. For Meursault, being a Frenchman living in Algeria during the French occupation in mid-1940s, his immorality is developed purely in terms of philosophical reason, that human constructs ideas to create meaning in a meaningless life. For Harun, on the other hand, being an Algerian living in Algeria during the French occupation and its aftermath, his reasons for rejecting morality are related with his identities as a colonized, a religious hater, and his dysfunctional relationship with his mother. This study aims to discover the intertextual relationship that leads to shifting portrayal of an immoralist from the former text to the later one. In examining the relationship of both, the writer employs intertextuality for the approach as well as the theory of the study. Therefore, this study will be using qualitative method, with close reading being emphasized. It is hypothesized that the immorality embodied by those two characters happen because they are detached from the ideas in the society in which they are living. The discovery further affirms this hypothesis, and it reflects the author’s own detachment. For Meursault, he is an outsider from the society, while for Harun, his contempt for religious figure and dysfunctional relationship with his mother reflects his detachment from the society.
