Abstract

Indonesians’ interest of English movies and the availability of downloaded English movies from the Internet necessitates the presence of subtitle, provided by professional and nonprofessional subtitlers. One challenging issue faced by either professional or nonprofessional subtitler is cultural references (CRs). Due to their different positions, this study aims to find out how subtitlers deal with CRs translation problem by identifying the strategies employed and the tendency of the translation. The data was derived fromMillion Dollar Armmovie that was subtitled from English into Indonesian. The CRs were identified by using Newmark’s five classifications (1988) then CR’s translation strategy was examined by using Pedersen’s (2011) strategies. Qualitative method was applied in order to answer the question. The result showed that there were 116 CRs found in the movie which were distributed to material culture (45), social culture (36) organizations, customs, activities, etc. (33), gesture and habit (2). Professional subtitiler applied five out of six strategies such as retention (74 times), direct translation (23 times), substitution (20 times), generalization (9 times) and specification (2 times), while non-professional subtitler applied all strategies such as retention (87 times), direct translation (17 times), generalization (13 times), substitution (6 times), omission (6 times), and specification (1 time). The similarity of both subtitlers was that they applied retention strategy most of the time. Thus, their translation tendencies were SL-oriented. Further analysis on the strategies applied indicated no significant difference between professional and non-professional subtitler’s work in translating CRs even though professional subtitler received financial benefit and non-professional subtitler received none
