Abstract

Issues about gender differences in language use have been studied for decades. Concerning to the term vocabulary, the role of gender has also occupied a prominent place. Men and women may have different selection of vocabularies in using language, either in spoken or written language. The aim of this study is to identify and analyze the comparison of vocabulary profile used by male and female students of English Department, Faculty of Humanity Universitas Airlangga in their undergraduate thesis abstracts. The corpora taken for this study comprise 30 abstracts of male students and 30 abstracts of female students. Here, the abstracts were analyzed by using theory of language and gender by Lakoff (1975) and Jespersen (1922). The corpora were analyzed by using software named AntWordProfiler to determine the number of types, tokens, families, and the vocabulary profile of those abstracts. The vocabulary profile of the abstracts is identified based on Nation (2001). The results show the comparison of vocabulary profile used by male and female students. In the male students’ abstracts, the percentages of vocabulary profile is shown as follow; GSL 72.29%, AWL 11.38%, and Not Found 16.34%. Meanwhile, the percentages of vocabulary profile found in female students’ abstracts are GSL 72.89%, AWL 12.24%, and Not Found 14.88%. Using the limitation of range, this study found eight academic words used frequently among male students; strategy, research, process, media, text, feature, participate, context, eight academic words used by female students; reveal, conclude, gender, similar, consist, function, indicate, obtain, and eight academic words used by both sexes; analyze, data, theory, qualitative, approach, occur, method, and identify. In conclusion, concerning to the academic words, the percentage of AWL in female students’ abstracts is slightly higher than male students’ abstracts. It indicates that, as the role model of correct behavior women tend to use language more academically than men.
