Abstract

Women in a patriarchal society are generally being seen and treated as if they are an object, whereas, in fact, they are actually not. This phenomenon can occur in almost all aspects of life including aspects of sexual, social, and economic as depicted in the object of this study. Accordingly, it is pivotal to examine the issue that ensues in the story. This study deals with how women objectification occurs, particularly to the adolescent girls – Grace Parkes and Lily Parkes – in a young adult novel entitled Fallen Grace (2011) written by Mary Hooper. The writer aims to find out how women objectification can also occur within and outside the context of sexual sphere that experience by these adolescent girls as well as how the objectified act in response to objectification. This study uses qualitative descriptive approach and applies the Theory of Objectification by Nussbaum as well as three additional features from Langton. Based on the findings, it is discovered that women who are in a normal condition, independent and self-determined are able to fight back the objectifier after being objectified and even capable of saving the other objectified victim through their bravery. On the other hand, women who are weak, dependent and could not take care of themselves are more easily to become objectifying target whether by the opposite or same sex. In addition, they are also not fully aware while being objectified and incapable of saving their own self-dignity by fight against the objectifier when treated as an object.
