Abstract
In recent years, human’s body has increasingly become such a spectacle in the mass media. Hence, it is not only women’s bodies that becomes the main topic of examination in the mass media nowadays, but it is also happened to the men’s bodies. Men’s bodies can also be objectified and sexualized on display. In this study, this phenomenon will be explored more in order to give deep understanding about how male objectification that happened toward the male models works in the Jennifer Lopez’ I Luh Ya Papi music video. Female gaze theory that is based on Laura Mulvey’s male gaze theory and Nussbaum’s theory of objectification: seven ways to treat a person as a thing will be applied in this study to discover how men as an object are represented on display. Therefore, this study will only take focus on analyzing the male models in the Jennifer Lopez’ I Luh Ya Papi music video by using John Fiske’s TV Culture. After using three levels of TV Culture (reality, representation, and ideology), the upcoming result of this study is that I Luh Ya Papi music video offers the possibility of female gaze and male objectification. The representation of masculine man is also being negotiated in which physically masculine but mentally feminine. Moreover, men’s muscular bodies become such an object to fulfill women’s visual and sexual desire. Unfortunately, the existence of female gaze and male objectification in the I Luh Ya Papi music video is actually still influenced by the patriarchal culture. Thus, this music video clip is not really success in challenging female objectification.
