Abstract

This study discusses the representation of Orientalism which is depicted in A Hologram for The King Movie. The movie tells about Alan Clay, an American salesman who tries to sell his company’s products, a hologram, to the king, and it tells his journey in Saudi Arabia. The movie contains cultural conflict between the American and the Arabs. This study aims to unveil the representation of Orientalism and how Arabs are stereotyped in the Occident perspective. This study also analyzes how the Islamic Mysticism influences the Occident’s perspective towards the Orient. This study examines the way Orientalism is portrayed through narrative and non-narrative aspects. The Orientalism concept is delivered through the representation of the Orients and the Occident and through the binary opposition, othering process, and stereotyping in the movie. This study uses Orientalism theory proposed by Edward Said to analyze the movie and use a qualitative method to achieve a deeper understanding. As a result, in this movie the writer found out that Arabs as the Orient are represented as ignorant, unfriendly, uncivilized, irrational and patriarchal people meanwhile Americans are represented as the best, modern, and rational people. the writer also finds out that the distorting image by the American considered as mocking toward The Arabs.
