Abstract

Jonathan ‘Dumbfoundead’ Park, an Asian American rapper who went viral after his music video titled Safe hit millions of views on YouTube. His attempt to parody Hollywood’s whitewashing by superimposing his Asian face over White actors’ faces is calling out racial stereotypes, showing how Asians are being outcast as lead roles in Hollywood’s films. Not only presents the othering issue towards Asian, this video is chosen as the object as it is filmed from the perspective of Asian, a person who is currently experiencing those discrimination. By using postcolonial theories as the framework, this study is aimed to cover how Park challenging the othering towards Asian American in popular media. The data obtained were Safe music video officially published on Dumbfoundead’s YouTube channel, then analyzed by applying John Fiske’s Semiotic method particularly ‘Codes of Television’ that covers three levels of analysis: reality, representation, and ideology. From the result, it is discovered that in challenging the othering, Park attempts to prove the capability of Asian for performing the lead roles in the hero and action-themed films, while in romance-themed films he tends to negotiate the stereotypical Asian images. It is also found that Hollywood is still likely to be western-centered and have contributed to reinforcing the white supremacy. Therefore, it can be concluded that the discrimination practices towards the non-whites in media are continuations from colonial oppression. It took Asians as the insignificant ‘other’, while the Whites as the global ideal standard for culture, values, and lifestyle.
