Abstract

The existence of African-American models nowadays in the media are more often than before. Even though they appear more often, it does not mean that they can present their natural and real identity as who they really are, especially in the way of how their beauty is captured. The beauty representation in female magazine promotes false consciousness about the hegemonization of western domination. The standardisation of woman’s beauty has revolved around light skin, blonde straight-wavy hair, and the others Caucasian aspects. Teen Vogue is one of the most leading beauty-fashion magazines for teenagers all over the world that has been showing a lot of African-American as the models in its covers. The aims of this study is to reveal the new beauty representations of African-American models in the digital cover of Teen Vogue magazine. Beauty myth theory by Naomi Wolf is applied to support this study. To conduct this study, qualitative method and Semiotics approach by Roland Barthes will be used. The findings show that there is a shifting of the beauty representation of African-American models towards their original cultural beauty features, but there are still indirect opposite effects on it in order to keep the magazine selling values
