Abstract

Register can be described as the language of group of people with common interests or jobs, or the language used in situational associated with such groups (Holmes 2013). They tend to choose a variety of language when they meet a particular group that is appropriate to the situation or context. The writer found that phenomena above happened in volleyball commentary in NCAA: PAC-12 UCLA vs. USC in September 20th 2017 used by the commentators. The commentators uttered the terms related to volleyball game. This study aimed to identify the register features that mark the register of volleyball commentators. In addition this study also describes how those register meanings are determined from the context of situation. The data were collected by transcribing the volleyball commentaries from YouTube video. To analyze the data, the writer will used the concept of register by Holmes (2013), and a combination of register features proposed by Holmes (2013), Read (2000), and Yule (2006). Findings of the study show the features which mark the register of volleyball. The results, there are 31 vocabularies of volleyball register which consists of 24 terms in single word and 7 terms in more than one words. Another result is, there are 4 types found as morphological process in this study. These are compounding, conversion, acronyms and affixation.
