Abstract
Vocabulary is essential for mastery of foreign language, and therefore many ways have been adapted to improve student’s mastery of vocabulary. One of them is using fairy tales which is believed to be able to improve students’ vocabulary achievement. This research aimed at improving student’s mastery of vocabulary by using fairy tales. The participants of this research were eight graders (VIII-D of SMP Asa Cendekia Sidoarjo in 2014/2015 academic year. This class was chosen as the students had the lowest mean scores in English lesson (the average score of their English score was 55.2 (fair category). The research used an action research which was completed in one cycle which covered four stages of activities, namely planning the action; implementing the action; observing and evaluating; and analyzing the data and reflecting the action. Observation was used to monitor the process of teaching vocabulary through reading fairytales and the students‟ active involvement in the classroom. The results of this research were as follows: the students‟ English score improved from their previous score that was 64.5 to 69.6 after being taught vocabulary through fairytales. In the first meeting, there were 26 out of 33 students (78.7%) who were actively involved in the teaching and learning vocabulary through fairytales. From the research findings, it can be concluded that reading fairytales was able to improve the VIII-D students’ vocabulary achievement, as well as their active participation in the process of teaching and learning vocabulary. Therefore, it was suggested to the English teacher to also include fairytales as the teaching material when teaching vocabulary
