Abstract

The differences between male and female in writing are still less focus in the genre of text. Previous studies have usually observed in writing that has been limited to the data written on various topic in a range of contexts by a subject with a certain condition ( such as male and female with difference social condition, or different topics). This study focuses on syntactic complexity produced by male and female students of English Department of Universitas Airlangga. By using Nippold, Mansfield and Billow (2007) theory, syntactic complexity is measured by the use of different types of subordinate clauses, the means scores of T-unit and in clausal density. The subject of the study was 20 male and 20 female students that were give a task about writing an expository essay. The data that has been collected was analyzed using SPSS software in order to know the significance difference of syntactic complexity produced by male and female students. The results show that there are significant differences of syntactic complexity in expository writing produced by male and female students of English Department of Universitas Airlangga”. The ignificant differences can be found in two indicators of syntactic complexity including the mean scores of noun clause and T-unit. Male students produced less syntactic complexity than female. In other hand, female students tend to produce a compound, complex, and compound-complex sentence containing complex ideas based on their experiences or opinions and tie together into a sentence mostly related to the person-related topic
