Abstract

Open fracture grade II should be assumed to have contamination, so it is important to take action to prevent infection. In orthopaedic surgery to prevent infection, prophylactic and therapeutic antibiotics are necessary. Cefazolin is a drug of choice for orthopaedic surgery which is considered effective because of its good ability to penetrate the bone. Inadequate therapy can be chronic bone infection and result in mortality. The purpose of this study was to review the use of cefazolin administered to open fracture grade II patients, which include dosage, route of administration, and duration of use. It was retrospective descriptive study using patient’s medial record in 1st January 2014 until 31st December 2017 period. The result showed that patients with open fracture grade II commonly used single cefazolin (1x2g) IV as prophylaxis, followed by cefazolin (3x1g) IV as empirical therapy, and cefixime (2x100mg) PO as discharge therapy. The duration of cefazolin administration was 2 days. The study showed that cefazolin administered in a right dose (1-2g, up to 4g/day), right route of administration (IV), and right duration (24-72 hours).
