Abstract

Vania Ayu Puspamaniar*, Retno Asih Setyoningrum**, Dwi Susanti*** *Medical Science Program, Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University, Surabaya, Indonesia **Department of Pediatric, Airlangga University Dr Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya, Indonesia ***Department of Public Health – Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University, Surabaya, Indonesia Introduction: Pneumonia is an infectious disease attacking respiratory tract. This is one of the major causes on mortality and morbidity in children in the world. Many risk factors are suspected to be one of the reason why the disease still occur a lot. The aim of this study is to analyze the risk factors of pneumonia in 1 – 5 years old children. Methods: This is an analytical study with case control design. This study was held in Primary Health Care of Bulak Banteng, Tambakrejo, and Sawahan, from August to December 2017. The sample size was 40 for case group and 80 for control group. Primary and secondary data were used in this research. Primary data were collected by interview and questionnaire. Secondary data were collected by medical record at the health centre and Kartu Menuju Sehat Book. The data were analyzed by Logistic Regression. Results: Among the variables, birth weight and housing conditions and health status have significant connection with the number of pneumonia in children in Surabaya. Birth weight’s result for OR is 11,229 (p=0,043). Housing conditions and health status’s result for OR is 4,305 (p=0,002). Another variables which don’t have any significant connection are nutrition status, exclusive breastfeeding, based immunization, vitamin A, indoor air pollution, cigarrete smoke, socioeconomic status, home density, mother’s education, and pet. Conclusions: Risk factors for pneumonia in children which have the most significant impact are birth weight and housing conditions and health status.
