Abstract
Antimicrobial agents are widely used to prevent and treat opoortunistic infections. Those infections continue to cause significant morbidity and mortality in patients with HIV all around the world. Therefore, a review of antimicrobial treatment is needed. The study was aimed to describe the use of antimicrobial agents for treatment of opportunistic infections in HIV/AIDS patients, particulary for the Pneumocystis pneumonia, tuberculosis, and candidiasis. This observational retrospective study was conducted from May 1st 2016 to December 31st 2017 to all adult HIV/AIDS patients who recieved antimicrobial agents and had at least one opportunistic infections at the HIV clinic of Universitas Airlangga Teaching Hospital Surabaya. First-line antiretroviral agents were used in 28 patients and second-line in one patient. Co-trimoxazole as preventive treatment for Pneumocystis pneumonia (1x960mg) was given to 22 patients, while co-trimoxazole for therapeutic treatment (4x960mg) was given to one patient. Isoniazid as preventive for tuberculosis (1x300 mg) was given to two patients. Fourteen patients received treatment for first-line tuberculosis (RHZE and RHZES). In addition, nystatin and fluconazole were administered for the treatment of oris and oropharyngeal candidiasis in 19 patients. In this study potential drug – drug interactions were identified, such as isoniazid with glimepiride, paracetamol, zidovudin, and fluconazole with nevirapine and cotrimoxazole. To conclude, Cotrimoxazole and isoniazid were commonly used as preventive treatments. Antiretroviral, antituberculosis, cotrimoxazole, nystatin and fluconazole were used as therapeutic treatments for HIV and opportunistic infections (Pneumocystis pneumonia, tuberculosis and candidiasis).
