Abstract
The present study is aimed to investigate the distribution of lexical errors that occurred in the introductions of English department undergraduate theses of Universitas Airlangga that were published in 1997, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2017. Besides, the present study also aims at determining whether there is any significant difference from the distribution of lexical errors that occurred in 1997, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2017 and calculating the correlation value between the number of lexical errors occurrences and the years where the errors occurred. Lexical errors taxonomy proposed by Llach (2011) was applied as the main tool in identifying and classifying the lexical errors occurrences in this study. The analysis of the data yielded a total of 525 tokens of lexical errors and 112 types of lexical errors that were further divided into 4 out of 6 sub-categories of lexical errors proposed by Llach (2011). Log-likelihood test showed that 4 out of 6 categories of lexical errors were statistically different in terms of the distribution of lexical errors in 1997, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2013, and 2017. Moreover, the correlation test revealed that 3 out of 4 categories of lexical errors that were statistically different in terms of their distribution are resulted in the negative correlation value. This may imply that there was a constant decrease in term of the occurrences of lexical errors from 1997 to 2017. Furthermore, the findings of the present study suggest that the English department students of Universitas Airlangga tended to produce more semantic errors rather than formal errors.
