Abstract
Background: Cholera remains a major health problem in the world with 3 to 5 million cholera cases and 100,000 – 120,000 deaths per year. Resistance of Vibrio cholerae towards doxycyline and ciprofloxacin has been demonstrated in endemic and epidemic cholera settings. Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) is known to have antimicrobial effect. Purpose: To know the antimicrobial activity of Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) extract against Vibrio cholerae. Method: This research was categorized as true experimental method. Vibrio cholerae specimens were obtained from Microbiology Laboratory Faculty of Medicine Universitas Airlangga. Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) extract was prepared with concentration as follows: 100,000 ppm; 50,000 ppm; 25,000 ppm; 12,500 ppm; 6,250 ppm; 3,125 ppm; 1,562 ppm; 781 ppm; and 390 ppm. Dilution test with Mueller-Hinton broth medium were done to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC). After 24 hours of incubation, isolated bacteria from dilution tubes was inoculated on Thiosulfate Citrate Bile-Salts Sucrose (TCBS) agar to determine the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). Replication of this experiment were conducted 3 times according to Federer’s formula. Results: The Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) extract was 12,500 ppm. While the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) could not be measured. Conclusion: Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) extract has antibacterial effect against Vibrio cholerae. Further study need to be conducted to know the therapeutic effect of Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) extract towards Vibrio cholerae in vivo and the side effects and toxicity to human body, and also the potency towards other bacteria, to know the spectrum of this extract.
