Abstract

The development of Japanese anime and manga began when before the second World War. At that time the emergence of anime and manga still can not compete with the animation industry owned by the United States, Disney. Japan's defeat in the second World War, made the anime and manga industries collapse and restarted by Japan a few years after the end of the second World War. Japan's defeat in the Second World War also resulted in Japan's image becoming worse in the eyes of their colonies. There was an attempt to reshape Japan's post-World War II image. This then made the Japanese government consider using anime and manga used as a nation branding aspect. This research attempts to examine how government efforts in using anime and manga as cultural diplomacy by Japan in an effort to achieve nation branding. With explanations through cultural diplomacy and nation branding can see how the effectiveness of the use of anime and manga is used as a nation branding.
