Abstract

The accumulation of heavy metal pollution cause the ecosystem disturbance and cause severe effect on human health. This research investigated the ability of chitosan and shells waste from Placuna placenta and Solen vagina as biosorbent for three heavy metal, which were Cu2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+. Chitosan was isolated from the simping and lorjuk shells through deproteinization, demineralization, and deacetylation process. Biosorbent ability was tested through column method, where each of the chitosan and shells powder were packed into column with a height of 150 mm and an inner diameter of 17.5 mm. Each of the heavy metal was then pass through both column conducted at an initial concentration of 10 mg/L and the contact time for each elution was 30 minutes. Elution for each heavy metal of each column was conducted for two times to examine the ability of repeat usage. The result of Placuna placenta and Solen vagina showed that there was no significant difference p = 0.053 and p = 0.100 (> α = 0.05) of biosorbent ability between chitosan and shells powder. The statistical analysis of the first and second adsorption revealed that there was no significant difference p = 0.212 and p = 0.223 (> α = 0.05). Both of chitosan and shells powder from Placuna placenta and Solen vagina were able to remove more than 90% of heavy metal
