Abstract

Background. Indonesia is a multi-ethnic country. The fusion between Mongoloid and Austromelanesid produced Proto Melayu and Deutro Melayu race. Tooth morphology has been known to show variation form one ethnic group to another. This has generally, been ascribed to genetic influence and some environmental factors. One such morphological characteristics which has warranted a lot of investigations in different ethnic groups of the world is the trait of Carabelli and shovel incisive. A literature review on this trait suggests an ethnic variation. Study about tooth morphology is still rare in Indonesia. To authors’ knowledge, no study has been carried out on the prevalence of this trait in Java ethnic. Purpose. To determine the prevalence of Carabelli cusp and shovel incisive in Java ethnic. Method. This study had been done through observation at 50 alginate impressions for maxillary arch in Java ethnic student of dentistry at UNAIR class of 2010,2011, and 2012. Results. Percentage of Carabelli cusp in the first molars is 46% and percentage of shovel incisive is 86%. The type of Carabelli cusp with the highest percentage is type V (Absent type)(54%) and the lowest is type I (Pronounced tubercle type) (4%). The type of shovel shape incisive with the highest percentage is score 1 type (42%) and the lowest percentage is score 3 type skor 3 (10%). Conclusion. The percentage of sample that don’t have the Carabelli cusp is higher than sample that have Carabelli cusp.The highest percentage of Carabelli cusp’s type in the first molars is type V (Absent) and the lowest percentage is type I (Pronounced tubercle). The percentage of sample that don’t have shovel in upper first incisive is lower than sample that have shovel incisive. The highest percentage of shovel shape incisive type is score I type and the lowest percentage is score 3 type.
