Abstract

Health risk behavior still occurs a lot in youths in the world and Indonesia. Youths do health risk behavior because peer influence through various activities such as cangkrukan. The purpose of this research was to uncover the health risk behavior and health beneficial behavior that occurs in youths when cangkrukan as a socio-cultural practice that is understood in a power relation and ideology of capitalism. This research was qualitative with an ethnographic approach to understanding the culture of youths. This research was carried out in traditional coffee shops, fastfood restaurants, and parks in February-May 2018. The selection of informants used a purposive method, used in-depth interviews and observation as part of the data collection process. Data analysis used is Norman Fairclough’s discourse analysis. The result of the research shown that cangkrukan encourage health risk behavior in the form of smoking, drinking of oplosan, consumption of drugs such as koplo pills and fast-food consumption. Cangkrukan also can encourages health beneficial behavior in the form of happiness and satisfaction after the cangkrukan. The new finding in this study was that cangkrukan by young people are encouraged by sociocultural context of marginal subculture and capitalist hegemony in the form of commodification of capitalist products.
