Abstract

This paper is trying to analyze the message within the movie John Carter (2012) about the Portrayal of White Superiority within the Protagonist of the John Carter Film. Power in cultural studies writers, is regarded to be the most infiltrating in every level of social community and relationship, especially in post-colonial studies. In John Carter, the post-colonial issues are big enough to be noticed in a glance of eyes. The separated characteristic that differs the occident and the orient brought orientalism to the surface. The notions of “white hero” as the novelistic hero and colonial settler gave a big impact on creating idea of going native. By using Edward Said’s theory about Orientalism, this paper is trying to analyze the representation and portrayal of the main protagonist of the film together with how the protagonist’s relationship with the other character within the film. The method that will be used is narrative non-narrative types of research, in a way this paper will analyze through the narrative part and the non-narrative part of the movie to find the superiority of the protagonist within the film. In result, with how this film is delivered to the audience by showing some tiny hints regarding the anti-colonials parts, together in closer look, this film still promote the power possession as part of the imperialist notion.
