Abstract

Background: Tooth avulsion is tooth which whole body has detached from its socket and causing damage to periodontal tissue and pulp from traumatic injury. Avulsed tooth must be replanted quickly, because the vitality of periodontal ligament determine success rate replantation. Storage media before replantation to maintain the vitality of periodontal ligament cells is required. Bottled coconut water and UHT milk can be used as storage media because it is isotonic contains minerals and commercially available. Purpose: To compare the effectiveness of bottled coconut water and UHT milk as a storage medium of avulsed tooth. Methods: Twenty-seventh freshly extracted Cavia cobaya teeth were divided into 3 groups, 1 experimental group and 2 control groups, each of which where either devided into 3 subgroups based on the lenght of the soaking which are 30, 60, and 240 minutes. Furthermore, periodontal ligament fibroblasts were cultured with Versen trypsin solution, and labeled using 0.4% trypan blue and then counted by hemocytometer on a light microscope. Results:The amount of fibroblast in UHT milk groupwas significantly higher than mineral water and bottled coconut water groups in 30, 60, or 240 minutes. Conclusion: UHT milk is more effective than bottled coconut water as a storage medium of avulsed teeth up to 240 minutes.
