Abstract

Background: The incidence of congenital hydrocephalus is 0,9 to 1,5‰ live births. S100 β is a cytosol protein found predominantly in glials cells that indicates malfunction and or damage to the blood brain barrier. Increased serum levels of S100β and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) have been found in cases of astrogliosis and children hydrocephalus. Objective: To analyze the relationship between the rate of S100β in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum with the change of cerebral mantle thickness and ventricular size in congenital hydrocephalus post-drainage of CSF. Method: This study is a prospective longitudinal observational study, the cerebral mantle thickness and assesment of ventricular size and CSF and serum sampling done during drainage measures, further radiologic evaluation three months after surgery and re-measured cerebral mantle thickness and size of the ventricles. Results: Pearson correlation test showed significant negative correlation between levels 0f S100 β of CSF and serum with cerebral mantle thickness changes after drainage of CSF with correlation r -0,671 and -0,646 (α 0,01 r -2,479). A ssignificant relationship also presents between levels of S100 β of CSF and serum with changes in ventricular size which the value of r -0,693 and -0,597 (α 0,01 r -2,479). Conclusion: There is significant correlations between CSF and serum S100beta high rate with the change of cerebral mantle thickness and lower ventricular size post CSF drainage.
