Abstract

Public knowledge about antibiotic and their use is an important factor to help achieve rational use of antibiotics. This study aimed to investigate the profile of knowledge of undergraduate students of faculties of health at Airlangga University about antibiotics and their use. The study conducted in the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Nursing and Faculty of Public Health at Airlangga University, in December 2010. The samples taken in this study were 93 respondents who were on their 7th semester, had used oral antibiotics, had completed a pharmacology course participated in this study. Multistage sampling was used to draw respondents. A self administerd and validated questionnaire was used to collect data. The study found that 5.4% students had poor knowledge and 94.6% had adequate knowledge about antibiotics and their use. This study may provide input for pharmacists and other health professionals to increase quality of providing information on antibiotics and their use, in order to achieve optimal therapeutic outcome and minimal side effects of antibiotics.
