Abstract

Diphtheria is an acute disease caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae that are produce toxin. It spread very quickly and can be transmitted by man or contaminated food. Complications may occur in pediatric patient with diphtheria. It needs proper treatment and management that appropriate with patient’s condition. The aims of this study was to identify the profile of drug use in diphtheria. It was a retrospective study during period January 1st to December 31st 2011 in Department of Pediatric Inpatient Care Dr. Soetomo Teaching Hospital Surabaya. The results showed that from 39 pediatric patients with diphtheria, majority in the age of 6-12 y.o. The common symptoms that occured were sore throat (if use to swallow), pseudomembran and cough. Main therapy in diphtheria was antitoxin diphtheria or often called anti diphtheria serum (ADS) and antibiotics (penicillin procaine and or erythromycin). Antitoxin diphtheria (ADS) was administered at a dose 40,000 U; 80,000 U and 100,000 U by intravenous drips. The first antibiotic was penicillin procaine which administered at a dose 40.000 – 136.000 IU/kg body weight/day by intramuscular route. And the second antibiotic was erythromycin which administered at a dose 30 – 60 mg/kg body weight/day by oral route. The both antibiotics can be used as an single or combination treatment for diphtheria. Other drugs for comorbid as well as complication were antibiotics (except penicilline procaine and erythromycin), antiviral, corticosteroid, gastritis medicines, antiallergic, antiemetic, bronchodilator, antifungal, electrolytes, inhalation therapy, oxygen therapy, NSAIDs, vitamin and supplement
