Abstract

Trepanation is a surgical intervention which its aim is to high intracranial pressure caused by the mass growth of brain tumors. Trepanation has a high risk of infection. Ceftriaxone is a broad spectrum antibiotic which can be used as antibiotic prophylaxis in trepanation. This study was conducted retrospectively from January 2009 to December 2011. The study was designed to examine the use of ceftriaxone including its dose, route, duration, and frequency of administration in patients with brain tumors of which trepanation-excision of the tumor performed. The data were obtained from patient medical record in RSUD dr. Soetomo. The ceftriaxone was evaluated in 14 patients (9 female and 4 male). This study showed that the dose of ceftriaxone was appropriate except for the pediatric cases. The duration of ceftriaxone uses was 3 days until 11 days. In conclusion, ceftriaxone for prophylaxis antibiotic in trepanation was appropriate
