Abstract

In order to developing standardized herbal medicines and phytopharmaca antacid from a combination of clove leaves extract and lime leaves extract, acute and subchronic toxicity tests are necessary. The aim of this study was to ensure the safety of antacid preparations from a combination of clove leaves extract and lime leaves extract for developing standardized herbal medicines and phytopharmaca. In the acute toxicity test, a single dose of 7000, 3500, 1750, 875, 438 mg/kg BB combination of clove leaves extract and lime leaves was used orally for male mice. Subchronic toxicity tests were then carried out at doses of 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg BB of a mixture of clove leaves extract and lime leaves administered orally to white rats for 28 days. The results of the acute toxicity test showed that there were no dead mice and no toxic symptoms occured in all test groups. Based on observations of rat weight parameters, clinical chemistry, hematology, and relative organ weights from several vital organs of rats, it can be concluded that the combination of clove leaves extract (Syzigium aromaticum) and lime leaves (Citrus aurantifolia) did not cause subchronic toxicity effects in both male and female rats. However, a decrease in creatinine and an increase in eosinophils become caution in the development of phytopharmaca preparations. Overall it can be concluded that the mixture of clove leaf extract (Syzigium aromaticum) and lime leaves (Citrus aurantifolia) ratio of 1:3 does not cause acute toxicity effects with LD50 greater than 7000 mg/kg BB in mice and does not cause subchronic toxicity effects in rats.
