Abstract

Ranitidine HCl is one of the H2-blocker that commonly used for the treatment of upper gastrointestinal tract. It’s absorbed well only in the stomach and the early part of small intestine, and it is also metabolized in the colon so it has low bioavailability. Hence, a gastro retentive drug delivery system was prepared to enhance the absorption of ranitidine HCl leading to improved bioavailability. Tablets were prepared using wet granulation with HPMC K15M as matrix and adding ethylcellulose 10 cps to inhibit the release of ranitidine HCl because using HPMC K15M as a single matrix result in the release that are too high. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of ethylcellulose 10 cps in 5%, 10 % and 15% towards floating characteristics and release ranitidine HCl from floating tablet using HPMC K15M as matrix. The prepared tablets were evaluated on their floating characteristics. The release of ranitidine HCl floating tablets were evaluated using dissolution test apparatus II for 8 hours with 0.1 N HCl at 370C. The results showed a good floating characteristics. The release of ranitidine HCl decreases with increasing concentration of ethylcellulose 10 cps.
