Abstract

Curcumin is the main active material of turmeric. Curcumin shows antioxidant activity, antiflamation, antimicrobe, and anticarcinogenic. Although potent and safe, curcumin has not been accepted as therapeutic agent. By a very small solubility in water and relatively low oral bioavailability. Hence, solid dispersions technique used to increase the solubility. In this study made a binary solid dispersion systems of curcumin- PEG 8000 with ratio of 1:1, 1:2 and 1:4. Preparation of solid dispersions made by fusion-solvent method. Whereas making of physical mixture made by mixing all material contained in the formula. The study was conducted to determine the characteristics solid dispersion of curcumin-PEG 8000 by using the infrared spectophotometric analysis method, Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and solubility test. The result of characterization performed with infrared spectophotometry found no significant difference from the solid dispersion and physical mixture. Based on diffractogram at range 2θ = 5o-50o shows a decrease crystalinity between solid dispersion curcumin-PEG 8000 and physical mixture. Characterization by Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) shows a decrease on curcumin endothermic peak both by solid dispersion and physical mixture. Based on SEM photomicrographs with magnification level 500 times shows that on solid particles of pure subtances are mixed together than the physical mixture. Under solubility test showed that the solubility of the solid dispersion was higher than the physical mixture.
