Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of gentamicin (GEN) in Bovine Hydroxyapatite-Gelatin-Glutaraldehyde (BHA-GELGA) implants against bone healing in bone defects through analysis of Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) expression using bone fractured model in rats. A defect was created at the right femur with a diameter of 2 mm in all groups. The animals were divided into 3 groups, the control group without implants (K1), the BHA-GEL-GA (K2) implant group, and the BHA-GEL-GA-GEN (K3) implant group. Healing process was observed after 2, 7, 14 and 28 days after induction of fracture. Radiological analysis was done by observed at the healing of bone qualitatively and histological analysis using immunohistochemistry staining was focused on ALP expressions. The results showed, there was not much difference in the bone healing at the defect area between K2 and K3 with radiological observations. But, K3 gave better result than K1. Whereas, the results of the analysis of ALP expressions with immunohistochemical observations showed that the mean ALP expression increased in the K2 and K3 groups compared to the control group but did not differ significantly. This study shows that the addition of gentamisin in BHA-GEL-GA implants does not affect bone healing due to defects.
