Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the self medication profile of pharmacy consumers that did self medication for children, including predisposing factors, enabling factors and reinforcing factors, as well as to determine the use and selection of drugs. This research was conducted by survey method using questionnaire as data collection form. A total of 100 pharmacy consumers were selected by purposive sampling method from 26 pharmacies randomly selected in North Surabaya. The first action they did to cure their symptoms were buying medicines at pharmacies (47.0%), 49% of respondents bought the drugs for age 1-5 years old as much as 45% of respondent symptoms suffered by their children are fever (45%). Most reason to choose the pharmacy was due to close to home (33.0%). Most respondents considered medicine as not too expensive (49.0%). Source of drug information from doctors (24.0%). Most of the respondents reasons for choosing the medicine is effective (42.0%) and 83.0% of them mentioned the name (brand) of medicine when they asked to the pharmacy staffs. Most of respondents had been using medicines they were buying time before (76.0%) and generally they have known rules of drug use purchased (98.0%). Drug dosage forms majority was a liquid (85.0%). Most classes of drugs were over the counter drugs (95.0%). 48% of respondents using drugs purchased for 2-3 days when they were ill. More than 90% of respondents had noticed the important aspects that need to be observed in drug packaging. This should be evaluated against the performance of pharmacists in health care services, especially information giving related to medicine that consumer used in self-medication
