Abstract

Nowadays, the need of people to perform self-medication especially for drugs is very high. In accordance to that, pharmacy staffs obliged to take the right actions as a response to the demand of drugs in order to ensure the safety, efficacy, and rationality to further improve patients’ quality of life. The aim of this study was to capture the profile of mefenamic acid self-medication service by pharmacies in South Surabaya. This study was performed using cross sectional study method. From the simple random sampling method, 49 pharmacies was selected with pharmacy staffs as the object. Simulated patient method was used to collect the data. Study instruments that was used were research protocol, scenario, and checklist that had been passed the validity and reliability test. The results were, from 49 pharmacies 16.3% performed patient assessment, 100% gave drug recommendations, and no pharmacy staffs gave drug related information, unless the researcher gave a hint. Information that were given : indications (100%), side-effects (100%), dosing (100%), administration time (26,4%), length of therapy (24,3%), and non pharmacology suggestions (4,0%). Some information was not delivered by the staff such as, storage information, how to treat the leftovers, and how to identify damaged drugs. Pharmacy staffs that serve the patient were : pharmacist (26,5%) and non-pharmacist staffs (73,5%). Mefenamic acid sef-medication service in south surabaya have not shown the optimal pharmacist involvement. Pharmacists need to improve the pharmaceutical care practice especially regarding to self-medication service in order to deliver better patient assessment, recommendations, and complete drug related information to ensure the safety, accuracy, and rationality of the drugs to improve patient’s quality of life
