Abstract

Self-medication is the selection and using of drugs by individuals to relieve symptoms without doctor intervention. Self-medication in children need a special attention because of the differences in drug response between children and adult. A descriptive cross sectional study was then conducted to determine self-medication pattern in children by pharmacies customers in East Surabaya. One hundred customers who requested an oral non prescription drug for children (0-12 years old) was selected by purposive sampling at 36 pharmacies in East Surabaya. Thirty six pharmacies was selected by simple random sampling. The result show that most customers who did self-medication to children were female (55%). Of the population surveyed, 48% being between 31-40 years old, 43% completed senior high school and 43% customers were private employee. Recurrent symptoms in children were cough (15%) and fever (14%). The frequent reasons in self-medication for children was for preventive care (30%). Mostly, customers requested a medicine by the name/ brand of the drug (71%) and they had purchased it on previous occasions (70%). The use of ”a prior prescription” had a frequency of 34%. There was 10% customers who bought prescription drugs. Previous experience and reuse of a prior prescription became an influential factor in self-medication. Therefore, pharmacist must be proactive in the management and inspection of the inappropriate consumption of medication especially prescription drugs which should only be taken under medical supervision.
