Abstract

Generic drug is a drug named with International Non-proprietary Names (INN). The use of generic drugs in Indonesia is quite low. Public perception might be the factor that affects the use of generic drug. Perception is a structured process starts from the introduction, selection, and experience. A descriptive study using cross sectional approach was then performed on 100 patients at Pulmonary Care RSU Haji Surabaya to identify the perception of patients in the use of generic drug. The obtained data were processed using SPSS and presented in percentages form. Result showed that 64 (64.0%) of respondents believed that the cost of generic drug is affordable and 71 (55.9%) of respondents said that they get the information about generic drug from health personnel. In the selection variable, the major reason of respondents using generic drug was their doctor prescribed it for them (79 respondents; 49.7%). On the experience variable, 85 (85.0%) of respondents said that generic drug is effective to the treat diseases, and 78 (78.0%) of respondents said they have never experienced adverse effects. 97 (97.0%) of respondents agreed that generic can be drug obtained at various health facilities. In conclusion, perception on the use of generic drug is actually appreciated by patients and many of them still have the eagerness to use generic drugs.
